Jindal Steel Creates History by Building World’s Longest Steel Slag Road, Enters Guinness World Records

Raigarh: Jindal Steel, in collaboration with scientists from across the country, has established a new milestone in Raigarh. The company has constructed a 1.85-kilometre-long, four-lane road using 100% steel slag generated from its steel plants. Made entirely from processed steel slag, the road has been recognised as the world’s longest road constructed using processed steel slag and has been included in the Guinness World Records.

The road was inaugurated online on Saturday during a ceremony organised in New Delhi by Union Minister for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, and Chairman of Jindal Steel Limited, Mr. Naveen Jindal.

Realising the dream of “Waste to Wealth,” nearly 2 lakh tonnes of processed steel slag has been used in the construction of this road. This eliminates dependence on the excavation and mining of natural stone, thereby conserving natural resources. The road has not been built merely as a demonstration project but has been designed to withstand the movement of heavy commercial vehicles, including trucks. This will help save both financial and natural resources.

Compared to conventional roads, the road is approximately 35% thinner, while its construction has resulted in around 40% cost savings.

Jindal Steel, in collaboration with CSIR and the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), scientifically processed the steel slag through crushing, metal extraction and grading to convert it into aggregates suitable for road construction. The processed slag has been used from the bottom-most layer of the road to the upper bituminous layer. The material was approved only after successfully undergoing stringent environmental tests.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Naveen Jindal, Chairman, Jindal Steel Limited, said that India’s progress should be driven by innovations that protect the environment while creating value for the nation. He said that this technology demonstrates how industrial waste can be transformed into an important resource for nation-building.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister for Science and Technology, said that the project realises the vision of “Waste to Wealth.” He added that it demonstrates how indigenous technologies can provide solutions to some of the major challenges facing the country.

Jindal Steel has named the processed slag “Steel Grit,” and its logo was unveiled on the occasion. An agreement was also signed to facilitate the use of this technology in road construction across other parts of the country.

This landmark project, which paves the way for the utilisation of steel plant slag in the construction of high-quality roads, has been developed to provide a direct connection between the Jindal Cement project site and National Highway-49.

During the construction of the project, several eminent scientists and experts from across the country visited the site regularly, inspected the work and provided valuable suggestions. Recently, a team from the Guinness World Records also visited Raigarh to inspect the site and verify the project.

During Saturday’s inauguration ceremony, all officers and employees of Jindal Steel Limited, Raigarh, joined the programme online.
